The Parish

The whole of the country is divided in districts called Parishes. A Parish Church serves each and a curate is appointed to whom is delegated the care of the souls of all the people who reside in the parish.

In 1922, The District of  Saint Edmund, Chingford was constituted, formed out of the Parish of Chingford. It comprised the locality of South Chingford that had grown up on the farmland below the brow of the Church Hill. In addition to this part of Chingford Parish, Wrangling Mead – a small detached part of the parish of Walthamstow – was also added.

The district was raised to the status of a New Parish in 1939, and in 1997 was enlarged with the transfer of the Salisbury Hall area from the Parish of Saint John, Walthamstow.

Those who reside in the parish – known as the parishioners – have certain rights irrespective of whether they are churchgoers or not.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE PARISH

South Chingford is a dormitory suburb in Northeast London – mainly residential though with a small industrial area in the southwest by the river Lea. In the mid nineteenth century it solely comprised three farms (Cherrydown, Chingford Hall, and Normanshire), the manor house of Chingford Hall, Chingford Mill, and the Ferry House. Historically, the ford across the Lea after which Chingford is named was located in the parish.  There was a gradual build up of housing in the area from the late nineteenth century beginning at Suffield Hatch, but the main development occurred from 1931 when South Chingford ceased to be a rural farming community.
